7 Tips For Throwing The Best Themed Parties
If there is one thing our Cocktail Cowboys can’t resist, it is being part of epic-themed parties! Be it a 90s-themed birthday, a heartbreaker divorce party, or a Hollywood-inspired bash, having a party with a theme is a unique way to celebrate life’s milestones. And the best thing about them is that you’re free to choose any theme you want!
However, unlike the “normal” counterpart, throwing a themed party can be challenging. Since you’re centering the whole event around a certain concept, there are a lot of aspects you need to think about to make sure everything looks cohesive. While you may believe that finding the appropriate decorations may be the hardest thing to do, many more unexpected issues can make you want to pull out your hair!
But don’t let this discourage you from throwing one! With the proper guidance, throwing a themed party can be a piece of cake – you just need to put your organization cap on and not let the process stress you out. Since our Cocktail Cowboys have attended more themed parties than you can imagine, we have created a list of tips on how to throw a themed party. With our experience (and boys!), you’re bound to have a party that people won’t stop raving about for years!
1. Come Up With A Theme
A themed party without the theme is just a regular party! That said, think long and hard about what theme you’d like to go for. Of course, some of you may find this to be a bit difficult as there are countless ways you can go about your theme, but luckily, there is a general “rule” you can rely on. Namely, you can think about your interests and what you find exciting. For instance, if you’re a music lover, you can curate your very own Grammy Awards ceremony. Alternatively, if you see life all pretty in pink, a Barbie-themed bachelorette party might be the perfect choice for you!
Another easy way of coming up with a theme for a party is to think about decades! As you know, each decade is more unique than the next one. The roaring 20s with their dazzling flapper outfits, the glorious era of disco, the hip-hop swag of the 90s, and the list goes on and on. With that in mind, simply research a decade you find interesting, and you have your theme!
If you’re still feeling stumped, here are a few of Cocktail Cowboys’ favorite party theme ideas that will always be a hit!

2. Find A Suitable Venue
Once you pick, the next step of how to throw a themed party is finding the right venue! Typically, the guestlist will determine how big of a space you need, but because you’re throwing a non-ordinary part, there is one more thing you need to think about. Namely, your choice of venue needs to be suitable for your chosen venue. For instance, a disco-themed party might be hard to pull off at a pool – after all, a disco ball with epic lighting effects is a standard! Naturally, with themed parties, you can be as creative as you want. However, to make things easier for yourself, don’t try to pull off something almost impossible.
Another thing you should also consider is the location of your venue. We advise you to go for something convenient and easily accessible. But if the perfect one is a bit far away, you should also include transport plans. Granted, you’re (probably) not going to choose to host your party with a theme in an entirely different state. Still, you should inform your guests ahead of time so they can arrange travel plans appropriately.
3. Themed Parties Feature Epic Decorations!
It’s time for the best part of themed party planning – buying all the decorations! After you get the lay of the land of your venue, search online for decoration. During this part, we advise you to go all out and not leave a single space undecorated! Since the main goal of themed parties is to transport the guests to a special place or time, everything needs to be in place. That said, if you’re throwing a Barbie-themed bachelorette party that we suggested above, everything from the wall decor down to the cups and place needs to scream in pink! Again, your guests should feel like they’re not in the present, so leave no stone unturned.
4. Theme-Out The Food And Drinks
Just like the decorations, the food and drinks need to be on par with the theme. However, don’t overdo it. In other words, don’t compromise the taste so something can look pretty. While we mentioned the importance of following the theme, the most important aspect of any party, no matter its type, is the guest experience.
Additionally, there is another way you can achieve cohesiveness, specifically for the drinks. Instead of mixing up different kinds of beverages to create a signature cocktail that just tastes funky, decorate the bar along with the theme. Also, to save yourself from the trouble of creating odd-tasting “cocktails”, it’s best to hire a professional bartender. Luckily, our Cocktail Cowboys are just that – among other things!
5. Dress The Part
Have you ever been to themed parties where no one actually followed the themes? Not quite fun, isn’t it? Although there aren’t many rules when it comes to parties, there is one that should be adhered to no matter if you’re the host or guest – always follow the theme! For that reason, inform your guests ahead of time about the concept you’re going for so they have enough time to purchase everything they need to have a complete (and suitable!) look. Also, if you’re going for something more specific, you should also suggest places where they can buy the stuff they need. Even if you’re going for an ultra-luxurious party, your guests shouldn’t have to spend a fortune on just their looks. Make sure to try to keep everything on the average-to-budget scale.
6. Don’t Forget The Party Props!
What’s a Hawaiian-themed party without coconut bras, straw skirts and leis? As you’re already aware, every aspect of your party needs to be on par with the theme you’re going for, and that includes photo props as well! The fun thing about props is that you can even make them yourself instead of buying them in bulk.
Since we started with Hawaii, get a few strings, buy a bunch of colorful fake flowers, and gather your friends to make your own DIY leis! On the other hand, if you’re bringing out the big guns for your Wild West-themed bash, all you need is a bunch of kebab skewers, some glue, and printouts of mustaches and sheriff stars. Simply add them onto the skewers, and all of your guests will have a cowboy-like mustache for the photos! Lastly, if you want to hand out party favors, you can book a photobooth. This way, everyone will have a fun memento of your unforgettable party!
7. Hire Vendors
You probably want to give your guests an event they’ll remember for a lifetime, but there’s only so much you can do on your own. Yes, you might be able to take care of planning it, finding the right venue, and everything else we’ve mentioned so far. However, when the time comes for the themed party, you’re supposed to enjoy it. Naturally, you can’t really do this if you’re doing everything by yourself. Of course, you’ll do plenty of entertaining, but who will pour the drinks and capture everything on camera?
That’s why you need our Cocktail Cowboys! Apart from being eye candy and the biggest gentlemen the world has ever seen, the boys will ensure that your party goes off without a hitch! Normally, you’d have to hire a separate vendor for each specific aspect. This is because not all bartenders are able to capture perfect images. However, that won’t be a problem for our Cocktail Cowboys! Anything from fetching drinks and snacks to giving a relaxing massage after a long time of planning, we can make it happen! And don’t worry, they will arrive according to your theme. So if you’re going for a Barbie-themed bash, expect a few dashing Kens at your door!
With our themed party planning tips, pulling one off will be a breeze! The only thing you have to remember is to make sure everything is cohesive. That includes your guests as well.
